When I started my second tour at Edwards AFB in 1990, I noticed the nearby towns of Lancaster and Palmdale were now much larger, full of people commuting to Los Angeles. I thought they were crazy. Still do:

Where We’ve Ended Up

Two consecutive items in the New York Times news roundup struck me this morning:

• Donald Trump failed in an appeal to overturn a $5 million judgment that he had sexually abused the writer E. Jean Carroll and later defamed her.
• Trump endorsed Mike Johnson to continue as House speaker.

Our year-end status:

• We have elected a president whom we understood beforehand to be a sex criminal.
• We have a president who issues endorsements for leadership positions in the legislature.
• The sex criminal’s endorsement helps the recipient, indeed it is vital to his success.

This is the supreme irony of the MAGA schism over H-1Bs. Many workers who stayed at Twitter after Musk’s takeover did so because their status in the US was contingent on their employment. They kept a site running that was then used by MAGA folks to question why they were here in the first place.
