We’ve had some in the last few years. January 6, 2021 told us all we’ll ever need to know about Donny. February 24, 2022 told us all we’ll ever need to know about Vladimir Putin. October 7, 2023 told us all we’ll ever need to know about Hamas.
And June 27, 2024 told us all we’ll ever need to know about Joe Biden. He’s too old to be president. Period. It is no longer a matter of speculation, it is a matter of fact.
Which makes this from Tim Miller painfully funny:
Joe Biden needs to talk with his family.
And he needs to come out of that conversation either with a plan to pass the torch to a new generation or an unwavering commitment to change course.
Here’s what changing course looks like. He must summon an energy and a spirit and a forward-looking message that was absent in Atlanta. He must be committed to never letting what happened on Thursday night happen again—never putting on the kind of mumbling, robotic, incoherent performance that the whole world witnessed.
He must show that he is willing to do everything in his power to win this election. Go out and campaign among real Americans. Demonstrate that he has the vigor and will to earn their trust. He must take the fight to Donald Trump clearly and directly in interviews and on the stump. And he’s going to have to do so in the belly of the beast—on Fox News and in MAGA America to show that he is up for it.
Only he and Jill know whether he is capable of doing that.
Miller is telling us that maybe some change in strategy can defeat senility, that maybe Joe just needs to try harder or do something different, that maybe there’s one neat trick to not sounding or looking eighty years old. No, there is no maybe.
Of course Miller has to write this because he and his crew have been pumping out the happy talk about Biden’s suitability for months now. It wasn’t enough for them to say that Biden’s sole qualification was never having tried to overthrow our government. They got cute, they said he was a good president. And now they have to climb down, they don’t want to do it in one leap, and they’re sounding like idiots. There isn’t time for this shit.
