A lesson about connecting something you’ve stolen to the Internet:
A Westchester woman whose Apple laptop was stolen was able to connect remotely to her computer, photograph two suspects, steer the cops to them and get her computer back.
White Plains police used the photos to arrest Edmon Shahikian, 23, of Katonah and Ian Frias, 20, of the Bronx on Wednesday night. They recovered most of the $5,000 worth of electronics stolen April 27.
Cops said the woman got a call from a friend asking if she was online. She said no, but her friend’s computer showed her as being logged on to the Internet.
At that point, the woman signed onto another computer and used the "Back to My Mac" program to determine that her stolen MacIntosh laptop was on the Web. She was then able to log on and use the stolen computer’s camera to photograph the suspects. The cops took it from there.
I’m wondering if the ACLU will be after her. The thieves likely had an expectation of privacy where they had the computer. There may be some wiretapping laws in play as well.
